The Scratch & Sniff Book of Weed – (Review)

When I was a young lil Becks my dad gave me this book called Bambi’s Fragrant Forest and in this book newly born Bambi explores the sights and smells of the forest. Now this was many years ago, but I do remember it  being my favorite to read before bedtime because I found the scents so relaxing. I also remember going apeshit because OMFG SCRATCH & SNIFF!

Imagine my amazement when I saw a similar product, but one for adults!

The Scratch & Sniff Book of Weed is a wondrous creation from Seth Matlins and Eve Epstein with illustrations from Ann Pickard. There’s a variety of cannabis books on the market and many share a lot of the same information, but what sets this book apart from others is that it does so in its own unique way.

The board book is bright yellow and the cover has an illustration of someone smoking a joint with colorful puffs of smoke flowing with clouds and flowers sprouting out. The colors reminded me of the technicolor dreamcoat that Kramer from Seinfeld borrows. Visually this book is stunning, the colors and illustrations are very pleasing and brought back nostalgic feelings and a youthful exuberance as I turned each page.

When you read the title of this book you’re probably expecting it to have some dankalicious scents, while there are no actual strain specific scents, there is a wide array of other smells to tickle your nose. The most interesting of these has to be the steak/meat, black pepper, and pizza smells. There are other pleasant aromas within like: strawberry Pop Tarts and Nilla Wafer ones in the “Munchies” section, and the rose and musk scents in the “Sexy Time” section. The book smells good and each page will keep your interest piqued.

The Scratch & Sniff Book of Weed is roughly 20 or so pages, but covers a lot of useful information and is packed with the history of cannabis, the many roles it plays with our bodies and mind, and its place in pop culture. It covers terpenes and the entourage effect with information on some of the most common terpenes found in weed: myrcene, limonene, linalool, caryophyllene, pinene, and how they affect you.

There’s an explanation on the good and bad effects of weed: euphoria, creativity, anxiety/stress relief, cottonmouth and paranoia. The book also goes into the the difference between THC/CBD and our CB1 and CB2 receptors and how it affects our endocannabinoid system.

For people curious about the medicinal benefits cannabis provides, the last section touches on what ailments cannabis can treat. Cannabis is VERY beneficial to cancer patients, the CBD compound found in cannabis can turn off a gene that cancer uses to replicate cells and shrinks tumors. Weed can also help prevent epileptic seizures and muscles spasms caused by MS and many other medical conditions.

One of the things I liked most about The Scratch & Sniff Book of Weed is found in the introduction and is sometimes rarely discussed. The word “marijuana” will not be found in this book due to its racist connotations thanks to Harry Anslinger and his mission to prohibit the use and production of cannabis. This horrible man convinced people that the use of cannabis was something only a certain type of people consumed by stating, “marijuana makes darkies think they’re as good as white men” and scare tactics where he gave the impression that Mexicans and African Americans would be high roaming the streets committing murder and other crimes, also stating that white women would seek sexual relationships from black men, entertainers, and many others.

Another section I enjoyed was the discussion of how weed and sex go together. Cannabis helps our brain produce dopamine and that triggers our “pleasure centers” and it enhances sensitivity that creates a big batch of euphoria which can make sex while high more pleasurable. The book states that a study indicated cannabis can also create a deeper sense of intimacy and connection amongst couples. According to a 2016 survey, singles who smoked pot are 109% times more likely to have multiple orgasms….HEEEEEEYOOOOOO! I found this section interesting and important because the handful of cannabis books I’ve come across don’t really mention the relationship on sex and weed.
