Want to know when Oregon’s pot law would start?

Got a question this morning from one of our stalwart readers, Alex Redbud, about when Oregon’s marijuana law would kick in if Initiative 91 passes in that state this November.

After a failed search through the initiative by a couple of us newsroom folks, I called Brad Reed, deputy communications director for New Approach Oregon, who knew the answer.

If the initiative passes, possession of up to eight ounces would be allowed for adults 21 and over, and those adults could also grow up to four plants in their own homes starting on July 1, 2015.

The recreational system in the state, run through the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, would start accepting applicants as of Jan. 1, 2016.

From there, implementation and the launch of the first rec stores in Portland would be under the authority of the OLCC.

Reed said it’s still hard to tell if Initiative-91 will pass.

“Most of the polling around the state show that it’s fairly close,” Reed said.

He added this via email a little later:

“A growing majority of Oregonians believe a regulated approach is more effective at controlling marijuana than a criminal market approach,” Reed said. “But we are going to fight for every vote and make the case to as many Oregonians as possible.”

Hope that info helps!
